With the first half of the 2008-racing season coming to an end, last year’s title holders have placed themselves in a great position for the stretch run at Edinburg International Racetrack. Ed Galbraith, Jorge Molina, and Ruben J. Gomez currently sit in on of the top three places of their respective categories.
Sportsman champion Jorge Molina distanced himself from the competition during the July Bracket Bash when he won both days. Entering the race, the San Juan native held a slim 18-point lead over Sergio Paez. Molina now holds almost a 100-point lead over second place Richard Garcia. Paez, Chris DeBusk, and Rolando Ledesma round out the top five.
Junior Dragster champ Ruben J. Gomez made a huge leap by winning last month’s event. The Edinburg student entered the race in eighth place but left in second place when he beat current points leader Gabriel Garcia. Garcia’s brother Victor is in third followed by Gomez’s sister Andrea then Adrian Ybarra.
Ed Galbraith was the only champion to lose a spot during the July event. Galbraith of Alice came into the event in second place however he dropped to third when he lost second round. Preston Pennington remains in the top spot with Anthony Rios hot on his heals. John Alexander and Mike Garcia are fourth and fifth.
This week—along with the regular test & tune/fun and grudge drag racing—a Reaction Race takes place on Wednesday Night followed by the Import Invasion on Friday.
