Same Names, Different Drivers
Since the beginning of the year, a pair of brothers has managed to maintain the lead in their respective categories at Edinburg International Racetrack. The Pennington and Garcia brothers currently control the top position in the Super Pro and Junior Dragsters classes, while 2007 track champion Jorge Molina is pacing the Sportsman division.
Michael Pennington began the 2008-racing season with a pair of wins in February, however he missed the June event and lost his points lead. The driver who took that lead was Pennington’s younger brother Preston. The youngest Pennington boy used a first and third place finish in June to take the top place.
The brothers Garcia have one final round appearance each in the last five events. Gabriel Garcia placed second in the March event to take the points lead; however, his older brother Victor won the May event which gave big brother the top spot.
The only relationship Jorge Molina shares with the other driver to lead the Sportsman category is the color blue. Molina has driven his blue 1955 Chevrolet to three final rounds whereas Sergio Paez has used consistency from his 1967 blue Firebird to preserve the top position for the first four events. Molina leapfrogged Paez during the June event.
This week—along with the regular test & tune/fun and grudge drag racing—a Reaction Race takes place on Wednesday Night followed by the Super Gas Shootout on Friday. Edinburg International Racetrack is located 9 miles north of Edinburg on Highway 281. For more information visit www.edinburgracetrack.com or call (956) 318-0355.
